Work participation data and employment rates are the subject of Chapter 3. While India’s working population is largely in the informal employment sector or self-employed, Muslims are moving from the informal sector to the better-paying organized sector more slowly than other groups. Muslims are left out of many labour and employment preparation programmes. The government’s recent landmark Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme is a panacea of a sort for rural poor across India, but data in this chapter shows the surprising result that Muslims’ participation is negligible and conclusions discuss how and why this is so.
