This chapter considers Sweeney Todd which is an operatic serial-killer melodrama based on Christopher Bond's eponymous play. Sondheim, however, does not use the term opera for his works, billing Sweeney Todd as a musical thriller characterized with a series of numbers separated by underscored dialogue.
