This chapter presents an extended case study of how USAA, an insurance and financial services company that serves military families, used open innovation practices to develop and refine a process improvement that was ultimately implemented in the company. The chapter examines the methods used to develop the Pole Cam, which is a novel method for allowing insurance adjusters to assess roof damage without having to climb on the roof. The processes described in this chapter are valuable as demonstrations of key elements of open innovation and also as a template for other organizations seeking to add more innovation into their portfolio.
