This introductory chapter provides a summary of Carl McIntire’s career, affiliations, and activities, and summarizes the major argument of this book. It also contextualizes McIntire’s church and political activities with the major trends in twentieth-century US history and canvasses the interpretations about McIntire and his movement offered by previous scholars, by his friends and associates and his critics in the churches. These earlier interpretations involve gross distortions of fact which will be corrected in this study. Finally, McIntire is identified as a major transitional and transformative figure in the history of twentieth century fundamentalism and evangelicalism and as one of the most important founding fathers of the late twentieth century US Christian Right.

Keywords:   fundamentalism, evangelicalism, mainline Protestantism, anticommunism, Cold War, segregationism
