The fifth chapter elaborates on analysis of verbal reports from cognitive laboratories, including how to use a cognitive model or rubric to analyze the contents of verbal reports of comprehension processes and draw inferences. The chapter also includes discussion on how to select tasks for conducting cognitive laboratory interviews, representativeness of participants and sample size, and guidance for the rating and/or scoring of comprehension processes in verbal report data. In addition, the chapter includes discussion of software to facilitate the identification of themes, the calculation of inter-rater reliability, aggregation of verbal reports, and if appropriate, application of inferential statistical procedures to analyze data. Validity issues in drawing conclusions are also included, along with examples to illustrate ideas and procedures wherever possible.
