This chapter looks at the impact of politicization on Electoral Management Bodies (EMB) performance, in particular whether politicized EMBs function autonomously and in an impartial manner. This study analyzes these questions by examining de facto levels of autonomy and impartiality exhibited by the respective EMBs of El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. The chapter concludes that the autonomy and impartiality of the Central American EMBs largely depends on the degree of party politicization affecting each institution, notably the process of appointing members.
