This chapter proposes an interdisciplinary view of the music listening experience using the metaphor of a music listening “space.” A review of the perceptual, cognitive, social, and affective dimensions of music reception suggests a matrix of interconnected mental reference points that integrate multiple facets of the music listening experience. This matrix is conceptualized as a music listening space, in which the orientation of oneself in relation to the musical sounds, the physical environment, and other people is experienced and understood. Historically, music listening spaces have been shaped by prevailing, evolving stylistic features, sensibilities, and consumption patterns. Digital music making and emerging technologies are stimulating rapid and significant changes in the formation of music listening spaces. Implications for music teaching and learning are suggested.
