Philosophy is a systematic, precise reflection about values, ideas, beliefs, and meanings. Key questions include “What does it mean?” and “Is it true?” Questions and answers are represented through verbal discourse and written prose, which enable identification, clarification, rationalization, and evaluation. One would expect to begin the discourse by examining cultural values, ideas, beliefs, and meanings of music (and education), which would then provide direction for the field at the individual and collective levels. The crucial point is to keep the thinking and reflection fluid as further reflection occurs, including the feasibility of defining music and musical engagements. This chapter examines the feasibility of defining music and music making, historical perspectives on the value of music education, the role of critical inquiry during the process of thinking about and in music, the role of attributes and dispositions in music education, and implications as the profession moves forward.
