There are many possible models for the future of music teacher education. Each must be suited to the needs of the teachers and learners, nature of music, and institutional contexts and realities of the educational enterprise. This chapter presents one such model created with the goal of bridging traditional and emerging practices in music and music education. In this model, preservice teachers engage in direct experiences of singing, playing, composing, improvising, and listening as they concurrently integrate historical and contemporary practices in music teaching and learning. These foundational experiences allow preservice teachers to explore and develop a range of engaging, flexible, and responsive educational practices suited to shifting contemporary contexts as music and music education are redefined.
