Leadership is an assumed role for the musical conductor, yet how many conductors understand the ways in which approaches to leadership have changed in recent years and how these ideas will impact their work on the podium? Today, leaders in all settings are rethinking their approach to decision making and authority, choosing to emphasize collaboration and leading by serving in addition to or in place of historically autocratic styles. By thinking anew about one’s approach to leadership, the conductor can reframe and even advance the nature of the musical experience to be more meaningful to a contemporary population of musicians.
