Community Integration as a Paradigm for Transformative Change in Community Mental Health
This chapter argues that there is a need to change the narratives of people with lived experience of mental illness from that of “patients” to people. It argues that the World Health Organization (WHO) International Classification of Functioning is one tool that can be used to change this narrative by focusing on different life domains in their community contexts. Moreover, it asserts that communities can enhance the integration of people with lived experience of mental illness by providing opportunities for community participation, encouraging typical community participation that is similar to that experienced by people not currently experiencing mental health challenges, building people’s social networks and natural supports, and using mainstream resources. The chapter also notes the many barriers that must be overcome to achieve community integration and inclusion.
