On Hinduism

Wendy Doniger

Oxford University Press

In this chapter, the author reflects on her life as a forest-dweller in Chicago. She talks about the concept of forest-dwelling, which in ancient Hindu texts represents the third in the three basic stages of life, the first two of which refers to education and marriage. She describes forest-dwelling as neither retirement nor a plan of action, but more of a state of mind.
