This chapter focuses on tales of “clever wives” in Indian mythology. It looks at one such story, that of Muladeva and the Brahmin’s daughter, the final tale in Somadeva’s Kathasaritsagara, or “Ocean of the Rivers of Story.” Composed in Sanskrit in Kashmir in the tenth or eleventh century CE, this tale is about the encounter between Muladeva, the most famous thief and trickster in ancient India, and his wife. All of the members of Muladeva’s family are tricksters. This story is framed by stories about children who ask riddles.
