Hacking the Future

(p.1) 1 Hacking the Future
Warrior Geeks

Christopher Coker

Oxford University Press

This chapter first considers how the atomic bombing of Japan raised questions about the future of war, the inhumanity of war, and the relationship between technology and humanity. It then discusses the world's first computer, which came to life in 1944, the Colossus; Samuel Butler's novel Erewhon, in which he challenged the received wisdom that machine and animal life existed in separate worlds; the 1970s film The Formin Project, which featured an artificial intelligence system; and the thought of philosopher and social critic Theodor Adorno, who had sufficient grasp of the rhythms of the modern age to realise the historical significance of the new developments that were threatening to change not only the character but the very nature of war.

Keywords:   Theodor Adorno, war, computer, artificial intelligence
