This chapter explores the political economy of the 2010 economic adjustment programme that followed Greece's recourse to the EU/IMF bailout mechanism. It examines the programme in the framework of external conditionality, shedding light on the latter's strengths and weaknesses, and discusses the role of political actors and the tension between reform intentions and political calculus.
