Beyond Alterity

Beyond Alterity

The Path to Gratitude

(p.219) Chapter 11 Beyond Alterity
Psychology and the Other

Marie T. Hoffman

Oxford University Press

Commencing with the seminal work of Jessica Benjamin and extending her work through utilizing the hermeneutic approach of Paul Ricoeur, mutual recognition in psychoanalysis is explored and validated as a fundamental transformational component of the therapeutic process. In this chapter, evidence is presented that gratitude is the apex of the developmental achievement of mutual recognition, and it asserts a maturation that progresses beyond the mere recognition of the other’s alterity to appreciation for the other. The patient’s achievement of the capacity to experience gratitude for and with the psychotherapist may thereafter generalize to significant interpersonal relationships outside the consultation room.
