Abstract

Johannesburg’s location in the Southern Hemisphere and status as the wealthiest city in a middle-income country grappling with a growing wealth gap, many languages and cultures unevenly matched with English, and scarce resources place it in the global south, but it is a modern city whose representation in fiction, film, performance and poetry, and built environments is both uncivil and innovative.
