This introductory chapter begins with a brief discussion of the purpose of the book, which is to consider the factors already present in the society of the High Roman Empire that developed and expanded into the world of Late Antiquity, and what was new in this period and distinct from what preceded it. An overview of the subsequent chapters is presented.
