Thanks largely to the influence of Derek Parfit, the term ‘reductionism’ has entered into recent discussions of persons and their identity. Some theories are classed as reductionist, others as non-reductionist, where does C-theory stand? Is it a reductionist theory? If so, is it reductionist to an extent that is objectionable or problematic? After distinguishing some different relevant forms of reductionism (e.g., conceptual vs. compositional), it is argued that the C-theory is reductionist, in several senses, but not in ways that are in any way problematic.
