This introductory chapter begins with a discussion of democratization in the Asia-Pacific region during the closing years of the 20th century. The major themes analyzed in the book; the issues of diversity, ethnic politics, political engineering; and the structure of the book are described. An overview of the chapters included in the volume is then presented.
