This chapter explores the complex interface between law and Gothic fiction in England during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. It deals with the law as a source of the Gothic imagination and with the operation of the Gothic imagination within law and legal scholarship. It argues that the sublime is a key theme of jurisprudence in Gothic fiction and that it is this engagement with the sublime which provided the link to the Gothic imagination.
