This chapter considers certain preliminary problems concerning reparation for environmental damage in international law. It argues that while the subject of reparation has been the focus of considerable attention in recent times, this has not yet resulted in the elaboration of detailed principles regarding the nature and quantification of reparation for environmental harm. It identifies several questions to which international law will ultimately be required to answer.
