The Origins and Career of Marcellinus

The Origins and Career of Marcellinus

(p.32) 3 The Origins and Career of Marcellinus
Late Roman Warlords

Penny MacGeorge

Oxford University Press

This chapter attempts to reconstruct the career of Marcellinus from the 450s to his death in AD 468. Previous reconstructions have used as a starting point the few lines of Marcellinus found in Procopius' account of the expedition against the Vandals. Based on this evidence, most historians assumed that Marcellinus was an officer of the western Roman army in Dalmatia. The chapter takes a new approach, initially disregarding Procopius' information on Marcellinus and using other sources to produce a reconstruction which will be considered against the Procopius material.
