This chapter presents some background on Italy when it was dominated by Ricimer from AD 460s to 530s. Sources about Ricimer and his successor are described. Although these sources are not particularly good, these are sufficient for some assessments of his role in the sequence of events leading to the end of the western empire.

Keywords:   Italy, Ricimer, sources, western empire
