This chapter discusses the nature of the forces which Aegidius and Syagrius commanded. According to Priscus, Aegidius commanded a ‘large force’, and this was confirmed by his ability to threaten an invasion of Italy and resist Visigoths. The possible signs of evidence for Aegidius' military strength are: the Gallic field army, other units of imperial forces left in Gaul, the troops gathered by Majorian to attack Gaiseric, and unofficial recruitment of barbarians or Gallo-Romans.
