This chapter focuses on board membership. The effectiveness of a board depends on its composition, on its balance of membership, and on the skill of its chairman. The views of chairmen, therefore, need to carry considerable weight in selecting members of their boards, since it is their job to build them into an effective team, even though the selection process itself is one which should involve the board as a whole. This chapter discusses the considerations which board chairmen take into account in building their boards, bearing in mind that the make-up of an individual company's board needs to reflect the challenges which that particular company is either facing or expecting to face.
