This chapter discusses the considerations to take into account when appointing a chairman. Whether the board intends to appoint one of its members, or someone not currently on the board or in the company, there are a number of issues to consider in coming to a decision. It is important that the selected candidate has the qualities of a good chairman. These include the ability to listen, to lead, and to weld the board into an effective team. It includes having the commitment to learn what needs to be learned about the enterprise and those who make it up. Above all, it involves accepting that the post is that of chairman, not that of chief executive, and the willingness to establish a relationship with the chief executive which will foster unity of purpose throughout the organization.
