This introductory chapter sets out the purpose of the book, which is to offer an alternative historical analysis of the evolution of managerial rationality as a contested ideology and practice. It discusses the idiosyncratic nature of American managerial thought, a meta-analysis of the managerial revolution, and the instrumentalization of American management. An overview of the subsequent chapters is also presented.
