This chapter focuses on the fate of raped and abducted women in India. It discusses how this ‘shameful’ chapter in India's history provided one of the first challenges to the Constitution of the new nation-state on what is perhaps the most important question to face any newly forming nation — the basis of citizenship. Were women in the new Indian state fully fledged citizens? Were they ‘direct’ citizens, or was citizenship mediated for them through their men and their families? What was the fate of women who did not fit the norm? How, in the wake of decolonization and independent self-government, did the fledgling state deal with such questions?

Keywords:   decolonization, nation-making, women, abduction, rape, India
