This chapter opens by discussing the role of frontiers in history as both symbolic projections of power and means of controlling population movements. The reader is introduced to Albert Hirschman's model of exit, voice and loyalty in explaining the flight or fight options available to East Germans before and after the Wall. The introduction also acquaints readers with new East German sources, in particular mood reports (Stimmungsberichte) and petitions (Eingaben), which have enabled the book's overall perspective of history ‘from below’, in contrast with Cold War history's traditional preoccupation with high politics.
