The concept of participation, even though it has been a part of philosophical discussions and world-views since Plato, is obscure. Maximus' understanding of the cosmos includes a concept of how lower reality participates in the divine activity (energeia) in accordance with a spiritual development based on the divine principles of the logoi. Maximus seems, consequently, to have a clearly conceived concept of participation.
