There is a distinction to be conceived between God's essence and his activity (energeia). This distinction is discussed with a view to Gregory Palamas and earlier theological developments. Maximus has an interesting philosophy of divine activity, an activity that is distributed cosmologically and soteriologically on the basis of the logoi as principles. The logoi regulate the degree of participation in the divine being received by each creature. These metaphysical topics are fundamental to Maximus' conception spiritual development.
