This chapter begins by explaining the importance of the precedents set by the Conservatives in constructing the railway privatization architecture of 1993–7. It notes that these precedents shaped the parameters of railway policymaking under the Blair administrations. It also discusses the important steps made in managing the rail industry. It then talks about how the SRA was lost during the Morton and Prescott years, during Bryers and the Railtrack hiatus, and during the Bowker/Darling years. The chapter also presents several improvements made by the SRA in the transportation sector during 1999–2005 and onwards. Lastly, it discusses the probable future of Britain's rail industry.
