The Fall of Tsarism

Semion Lyandres

Oxford University Press

By examining the relatively little-studied question of prerevolutionary conspiracies to depose Nicholas II, this chapter demonstrates the interviews' factual value as well as their broad interpretive implications for understanding the political history of the February Revolution. It underscores the importance of prerevolutionary plans and visions in explaining some of the most pivotal political decisions that led to the fall of tsarism—from establishing the new authority in the form of the Duma Committee on 27 February to securing the abdications of Nicholas II and his brother, grand duke Mikhail, on 2–3 March 1917.
