This chapter discusses the application of quantum mechanics to the description of hydrogen and other one-electron atoms. The variation of ionization energy and atomic size with nuclear charge or principal quantum number is described, along with the atomic shape as defined by constant probability density contours of s, p, and d atomic orbitals. The chapter closes with a discussion of angular momentum and a classification of atomic orbitals as σ, π, or δ orbitals.
