This chapter discusses the concepts of emergence, reduction, and mental chauvinism. It argues that emergence might appear to be a metaphysically magical idea, but only so long as we do not look carefully at non-emergence. If there were no emergence of properties, then all simple and intrinsic properties of the effect have to be found in and extracted from the cause: the ‘pipeline’ conception of causality. It considers a function found in most, probably all, mammalian mental cortical systems — internal signaling — which could provide a solution to otherwise perplexing problems in the philosophy of mind.

Keywords:   causality, explanatory reduction, ontological reduction, philosophy of mind, internal signaling
