Once items are selected and screened, they must be combined into a scale. Factors to be considered include whether to weight the items; how to deal with missing responses; and how to transform the final score, such as using percentiles, standardized scores, and constructing norms. Often, a continuous score must be dichotomized for decision making, and a cut score established. This chapter discusses various options, including receiver operating characteristic curves, norm-referenced, and criterion-referenced educational and evaluation measurement.

Keywords:   weighting, norms, ROC curves, criterion-referenced, norm-referenced, standard scores, percentiles
