Their sacramental ontology enabled the nouvelle theologians to introduce history as a category with theological significance. This chapter first discusses Jean Daniélou, who regarded the relationship between cosmic and Christian revelation, secular and sacred history, as well as earthly and heavenly cities as sacramental in character. It then moves to the ‘theological’ theory of development of doctrine in Marie–Dominique Chenu, Louis Charlier, and Henri de Lubac. They combined historical development (the horizontal element) with continuity of doctrine (the vertical element) because they regarded doctrinal development as the outworking of the Incarnation. Yves Congar regarded Tradition as ‘the transmission of the reality that is Christianity’. For Congar, the ‘time of the Church’ was sacramental in character. As a result, later development (plenitude) and original deposit (purity) joined, in sacramental fashion, in the ‘time of the Church’. Development of doctrine was thus based on a sacramental ontology.
