A salient theme in previous chapters concerns the assimilation of artistic genres to natural languages, or—less ambitiously—the tendency to embrace analogies between artforms and linguistic structures. Here the assimilation is explored in detail, with attention to the precise content of such analogies. Although it remains an open question whether treating artforms as languages is theoretically illuminating, linguistic models of artforms carry no commitment to treating the mind of the artist as the ultimate arbiter of meaning and interpretation in the artworld.
