Starting from a classical model of the atom, the classical rate at which energy is radiated is obtained and then converted into a quantum-mechanical transition rate. The calculation of the radiative lifetime of an excited atom is derived and expressions given for oscillator-strengths of spectral lines. Applications to hydrogenic systems and more complex atoms are also described.
