This introductory chapter begins with a discussion of how the selection of bishops was of vital importance to the Christian church. It describes the book’s primary and secondary source materials, and presents an overview of the subsequent chapters. It then discusses evidence from the 3rd century — the correspondence of the mid-century bishop of Carthage, Cyprian.
