Rwanda (population 7.95 million people) is a country in Central Africa that covers an area of 26, 338 km2. In resource-poor areas, the blending of supportive care with hospice-palliative care is frequently linked to the development of previously established services, particularly home-based care. CARE International has built up a significant rehabilitation and development programme in Rwanda. Projects now include STD/AIDS prevention amongst other non-health-oriented projects. The history and development of hospice-palliative care in Rwanda is explained. The chapter includes life/oral histories, the public health context, health care system, and political economy.
