The Kingdom of Lesotho (population 1.8 million) is a mountainous, landlocked country completely surrounded by South Africa, which covers an area of 30, 355 km2. The international Christian NGO, Beautiful Gate Ministries, aims to provide a range of services for disadvantaged children that includes hospice care for babies. In Lesotho, HIV/AIDS has been the impetus for a perceived need for palliative care. Suggestions for development in palliative care are highlighted in the short-term recommendations offered by the Rapid Appraisal. There is no national palliative care association in Lesotho, nor are there any palliative care workers. The organizations currently delivering HIV counselling and testing are, however, well placed to integrate palliative care skills into their work. Additionally, the history and development of hospice-palliative care in Lesotho is reported.
