(p.314) 14 Dactylo-epitrites in Bacchylides*
Greek Lyric, Tragedy, and Textual Criticism

W. S. Barrett

Oxford University Press

This chapter examines two questions of Bacchylides' metrical practice in his dactylo-epitrites: the admission of short anceps and the observance of the lex Maasiana. It excludes from consideration the ten minor fragments preserved in quotation as being unreliable material; the fragmenta dubia; and conjectural supplements, except for a very few which appear inevitable. It also excludes all ancipitia which are the last syllable of a period.

Keywords:   Bacchylides, metrical practice, dactylo-epitrites, short anceps, lex Maasiana
