For many Roman strigillated sarcophagi their life continued after antiquity, as they were reused in various new roles. But to discuss this phenomenon effectively (rather than merely record it), some kind of analytical framework is needed, especially since few contemporary written sources survive to explain it. This chapter briefly discusses various possible approaches to their study, of which the most fruitful seems to be a multidisciplinary, period-based analysis. This allows individual examples of reuse to be set in the context of a particular historical society which can provide other cultural sources to illuminate the new values attached to these ancient sarcophagi.

Keywords:   reuse of sarcophagi, new roles, new values, analytical framework, multidisciplinary, period-based
