Chapter 7 is devoted to an extensive discussion of waves at the interface between dielectrics and metals. The chapter begins with some history of surface waves as a possible explanation for over-horizon radio wave transmission. The source of these waves is the periodic surface charge density modulation created by an electro-magnetic field disturbance at the interface. The periodic charge modulation can produce propagating or standing surface waves, depending on the nature of the initial disturbance. Surface waves at the interface between dielectrics and metals play an important role in ‘plasmonic’ structures and devices. Engineering analysis in the microwave regime lays the groundwork for the subsequent chapter on transmission lines and waveguides in the optical regime. The transverse magnetic (TM) and transverse electric (TE) modes (as distinct from polarisation) in waveguides are introduced and their properties elaborated.
