Abstract

This book calls for a return to the text in a sanitized historical criticism that sets aside a large number of traditional issues concerning Literarkritik (source criticism), Religionsgeschichte (history of religion), and the Johannine community and focuses instead on the text as we have it. Drawing on insights from narrative criticism, it articulates a narrative philosophical approach which allows the reader to find both literary and thematic coherence in John 1, 2–4, 5–6, 7–8, 9–10, 11–12, 13–17, and 18–20.
