Starting from the Kelvin and Clausius statements of the second law, all the remaining foundations of thermodynamics are obtained. Heat engines and the Carnot cycle are introduced, and used to prove the equivalence of the two statements, and to obtain Carnot’s theorem. Absolute temperature is then defined and discussed. Clausius’ theorem is obtained, and used to derive the existence of the state function called entropy.
