The fundamental relation of thermodynamics is given, and general methods introduced and applied. The thermodynamics potentials, Euler relation, Gibbs–Duhem relation, and Maxwell relations are all defined or derived. The idea of free energy as a form of potential energy is explained, and natural variables are introduced. Maxwell relations are used to obtain many basic results, such as the relationship between the energy equation and the equation of state, and between heat capacities and other quantities. The Gruneisen parameter is introduced. Finally, the entropy of an ideal gas (Sackur–Tetrode equation) is obtained in terms of its natural variables. This is used to illustrate the concept of using such an expression to obtain complete thermodynamic information.
