This chapter examines the rapid changes made to the institutions of higher education in Italy as result of the nation’s unification in the late 1850s. It also discusses the emergence of a ‘Jewish identity’ within the Italian universities. The leaders of the embryonic nation state recognized that educational reforms provided an opportunity to integrate figures that had been instrumental in implementing the political reform into the university system. Since the campaign for Italian unification had long been identified with the campaign for Jewish emancipation, educational reform also provided a way to introduce Jews as professors into university faculties. In the years leading up to and immediately after unification, five Jewish intellectuals were appointed as professors in various fields: Beniamino Sadun, Alessandro D’Ancona, Graziadio Isaia Ascoli, Salvatore De Benedetti, and Luigi Luzzatti.
